Given that electric and manual toothbrushes are effective brushing tools, features that equate to benefits are more a matter of personal preference. Many electric toothbrushes have added features, such as a timer that turns the toothbrush off after two to three minutes and pressure sensors that regulate the speed of the toothbrush and ensure you do not use too much pressure while brushing. In addition, an electric toothbrush can be beneficial if you have shoulder or arm problems, such as arthritis, that make using a manual toothbrush difficult.

Some studies vary as to whether a manual toothbrush is inferior to an electric toothbrush, but in our practice we have found that patients that use electric toothbrushes tend to get less tooth decay and reduce the chance of having gingivitis. There's no question that a manual toothbrush used correctly can be as effective as an electric toothbrush. However, an electric toothbrush allows patients to not have as correct of a brushing technique yet still be effective at reducing dental plaque.

Oral-B 3000 Professional Electric Toothbrush The newest electric toothbrush released by Oral B in 2010, this is a less feature packed and more affordable version of the Oral-B Smart Series 5000 It's a great basic electric toothbrush that's well designed. It has a 2-minute timer with 30 second intervals, pressure sensors and 3 brushing modes ( Clean, Sensitive teeth, Polish ). I particularly like the small round toothbrush head which makes it easy to cover the whole tooth and clean hard-to-reach areas like the teeth in the back of your mouth.

Removing up to two times more plaque than a manual toothbrush, the Philips Sonicare Essence 5600 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush uses powerful Sonic technology to clean teeth with up to 31,000 strokes per minute. These sweeping motions drive fluids deep into the tight spaces between your teeth and along your gum line, resulting in a cleaner, healthier mouth. The Essence 5600 is gentle enough to use on veneers, braces, implants, and sensitive teeth. Contoured Bristles and Soft-Grip Handle for Comfort

This is a great toothbrush. It is the same/or better than toothbrushes that are twice as expensive. The product does not feel cheap. The handle has a reassuring weight to it, and feels well made. The product is also beautiful to look at. The toothbrush has three modes (regular, low, and massage). I found the massage mode to be helpful in easing some pain from an impacted wisdom tooth that I need to have removed. This toothbrush does an outstanding job at cleaning my mouth. Another great feature is the sanitizing UV light. Overall, I would recommend this product to anyone that is looking for an electric toothbrush.

You know, I'm a little short on money, and cheap when it comes to these kinds of things just like anybody else, which is why I went for one of the cheaper electric toothbrushes I could find. But to my surprise when I bought the Philips Sonicare Essence Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush, I was very pleased with the quality of what I received. It wasn't difficult opening the package, contrary to some other electronics that you practically need a chainsaw and risk cutting off your wrist in order to open it.

The Philips Sonicare Flexcare Electric Toothbrush, which is available at Amazon.com is the #1 recommended rechargeable electric toothbrush by dentists, hygienists and dental professionals. Featuring a new innovative technology, the Sonicare FlexCare removes more plaque more easily than the Oral B Triumph and even the Sonicare Elite Electric Toothbrush. The integrated ultraviolet (UV) Sanitizer removes up to 99 percent of bacteria on your toothbrush. This is an important health fact, since bacteria not only leads to cavities and gingivitis, but can enter the bloodstream through bleeding gums and lead other serious health related issues.

A major benefit to using a manual toothbrush is cost. The cost of an electric toothbrush can easily be more than $100. In addition, replacement heads are not inexpensive and you need to replace the toothbrush head these every three months just as you do a manual toothbrush. Another benefit to using a manual toothbrush is in the design of the brush. You can purchase a manual toothbrush in a number of styles and brush lengths, and those with flexible handles may make it easier to reach difficult areas of your mouth, especially if you have a very small mouth.
