- Infertility affects about 15% of couples attempting pregnancy. The cause is found in the male about 20% of the time and in the female about 40% trouble getting pregnant of the time. Factors involving both partners are present about one third of the time. No specific cause is found in about 15% of couples.
Stressful Lifestyle If you have a stressful work environment, consider changing jobs. Stress will not only affect your fertility, it will affect your overall health and place you at greater risk for heart disease and many other health problems. Also, do what you can to relax often (at least once a day). Practice deep breathing to help relieve stress. What I do is inhale as deeply as I can with my mouth closed. Then I exhale slowly through my mouth. This is an instant stress reliever for me. Try it and see what it does for you!
Obese women who are not ovulating may start to ovulate after losing as little as 5% of their body weight, perhaps as little as 2%, though they will not have lost enough weight to avoid all the other risks and complications. Practically speaking, this means that you may want to try and lose significant weight before trying to get pregnant. This is a chance for you to get healthy and ensure the health of your baby. Once you get pregnant, you cannot diet. You have to eat enough for the baby.
What should they do? They need to increase and maintain their progesterone levels to the point where they can support their pregnancy, and they can do this by supplementing with progesterone. Normally when an egg is fertilized, this sends chemical messages that cause the follicle to increase its production of progesterone to 30 to 40 mg per day, double or triple what it made during the luteal phase of the monthly cycle when the woman was not pregnant. The level of progesterone increases gradually until well into the third month of pregnancy. By that time, the placenta is well developed and is producing progressively more progesterone within the uterus.
You and your partner may seem to be in perfect health - and you may have a textbook 28-day menstrual cycle - but that doesn't mean you're guaranteed perfect results when trying to get pregnant. The reasons for infertility aren't always observable to the lay person. Your hormone supplementation will be continued until you are 8-10 weeks pregnant unless you have been otherwise instructed by your physician. At about 8-10 weeks we will discontinue your medications and check your hormone levels off of medication. Last and optionally, consider having a glass of whole milk every day instead of skim or low fat milk temporarily while trying to get pregnant
