The beta patch is updated quite often. Although servers don't tend to start using the newest versions as soon as they come out, you will have to update from time to time. You'll find that some servers specify the beta patch version in their name. All you do is download the rar file, open it and run the exe inside. It will only take a minute or so. The only problem is if you launch the game using the Launch Arma2 OA Beta Patch icon inside the Operation Arrowhead folder as it over-write this every time. I recommend copying that shortcut to the desktop so that it will keep working otherwise, you'll have to edit it every time (as in Step 7)
Another way of becoming an efficient looter in dayz standalone is to become familiar with which buildings spawn the best loot. One of the most interesting features in the standalone DayZ is a revamped inventory system. The inventory will allow for crafting, interchangeable clothing, weapon customization, and even degradation of your items. As of today the inventory system has not been released but the user interface is expected to have a hotkey bar allowing access to items you will need most often. In the DayZ development blog it is stated that crafting will be done in a non traditional sense, prompting players to explore all combinations between items to see what can be created.
