- In Libya, in the City of Selene was a king, who had one child, Cleodolinda.
She was 14 years of age and was the most beautiful and virtuous girl to ever live.
The king loved his daughter with all his heart and was content with life.
One day a shadow fell on the king, no one knew from whence, and he was filled with apprehension.
That evening a watchman was patrolling the city walls and walked into a poisonous vapor from outside the walls. The fumes overtook him and he died. A knight found him lying there but the fumes still lurked and the knight also died.
The morning watchman found them, and smelled the faint odor. He looked over the walls to find an enormous black dragon crawling away to the marshes. Its breath was a black flame, the source of the poison, its wings were enormous and its scales were smooth like armor.
The watchman relayed this information to his superiors, and the word reached the king. The king remembered the shadow, and was filled with dread. He ordered no one leave the city.
That evening the dragon returned and poured its noxious fumes into the city. One knight, who was the bravest amongst them, volunteered to speak with the dragon and find out what it wanted.
He approached the dragon and it replied that it would only cease harassing the city if it would leave for him 2 sheep every day.
Every day, the people of Selene set outside the city walls 2 sheep. Until one day only a few remained.
Knowing they could not give any more sheep, the bravest knights in the kingdom set forth to destroy the dragon. But its scales were impenetrable and it was like stone, and the fumes from the dragon quickly overtook the knights who all perished.
With no more sheep, the dragon came to the city and filled it with his poison. The king went to the dragon.
"We have no more sheep," said he, "won't you return from whence you came?"
But the dragon replied "No. I will not leave but I will spare your kingdom if you bring me one child each day."
Because there was no escape, the people cast lots every day as to whose child would be sacrificed. None would be over 15 years old.
One day the lot fell upon Cleodolinda.
The king cried out "I shall not sacrifice my daughter. I will give everything including my life, but not her!"
The people replied to the king, "Have we not sacrificed our own children! Are you to do less than we?"
So, after eight days which the people granted, the princess, clad in white garments, was led outside the city gates. She waited not long before a shining knight riding on a white horse approached, fairer than any she had ever seen.
"What ails thee princess?", said he, seeing the fine girl in such distress.
"Alas," she replied, "a dragon lurks yonder, and waits to devour me. Pray sir, carry on, for nothing can avail the beast."
But the knight said "No. I cannot leave thee to the beast, but stay and fight I shall!"
At that moment the dragon emerged. The knight ran towards it. And the dragon was stunned by the shining knight. But regaining its focus it charged.
The battle was long, and slowly the knight could not defend himself, even with his shining shield. At the last moment, the knight noticed that through all the fight the dragon protected on part of himself, a part under his left wing. So with his last bit of strength, the knight thurst his spear into that place, and as he did so, the princess could see a radiant light emanating from him.
The dragon was not dead, but helpless, and the knight bade the princess lead the dragon back to the city.
When they had reached the city, in front of everyone, the knight, with his sword, slew the dragon.
"You have saved us! You have rescued our children." they exclaimed. "How may we repay you?"
"I ask only that you believe in God." the knight replied.
And so the city was baptized, and the knight sallied forth.
