  • Though water is one of the earth's vital elements, it can cause major trouble for anyone battling plumbing issues in their home. Fewer issues, minus a natural disaster, may cause so much damage to a home like a serious plumbing issue. Plumbing education and preparation makes homeowners more prepared to deal with them.

If one of your water pipes freezes, turn on the tap to the faucet nearest the pipe so that the water has somewhere to exit as the pipe thaws. This relieves the pressure contained in the pipe as it also prevents it from bursting, which would reduce the damage done to your house.

To prevent pipes in your house from freezing, do not let the temperature in the house dip below freezing. Also, any pipes exposed to the cold should be insulated. But, be advised that your pipes may freeze if the surrounding temperature near those pipes is less than freezing. It could take some time in order for the pipes to thaw out so that you can have running water. However, your pipes can explode, as well - making a huge plumbing bill.

Never reach into your garbage disposal with bare hands, even if there is a serious problem with it. Even while turned off, the garbage disposal is still a dangerous place for your fingers. Hire a professional, or at least find your owner's manual to look at a diagram of the disposal. Many owner's manuals are available online, and may even contain interactive troubleshooters.

Don't pour cooking grease, leftover frying fat or any oils down your sink drain. These substances will clog the drain as they cool and harden. This is especially true if you have a garbage disposal, as the fat will cause the blades to run slower and less efficiently. Pour the grease and oil into a can to cool, put it in the trash.

If you get your water from a well and orange or pink stains appear in your sink or tub, then you can be sure that the culprit is iron in your water. You can deal with use by using a water softener, which is something you can get on your own at a local retailer, or by hiring a professional to come out.

Do not use your toilet to get rid of garbage. A lot of commonly-flushed items such as tissues, cotton balls and swabs, paper towels, diapers, and sanitary napkins can clog up a toilet by failing to dissolve properly. As well, use just enough toilet paper to clean yourself!

Trash should go in the trash basket, not the toilet. Use the toilet for what it is designed for, and it won't give you a lot of problems. Don't flush paper towels, diapers, cotton balls, tissues or any other materials besides toilet paper. These items don't dissolve and can cause clogs. Use the least amount of toilet paper you can when you use the toilet, too.

Be sure to regularly clean out the lint trap that is in your dryer. This could prevent you from a tons of trouble, and it can also prevent fires. Inspect your lint trap every so often for tears or holes that could cause lint to go into your pipes, this could cause clogs or other problems you will have to deal with.

Do not flush unneeded things down your toilet if you want to lessen your chance of having issues. If you flush improper items such as disposable diapers, facial tissue, cotton balls, paper toweling, tampons or sanitary napkins down the toilet, you will surely have problems with clogs.
